Caravelle Flips the Switch for Earth Hour 2020
A consistent commitment over the years as an effort to save the planet, Caravelle Saigon will be joining iconic landmarks around the world in turning off lights for Earth Hour 2020, starting at 8:30 pm on March 28th. Started by WWF and their partners as a symbolic lights-out event in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour is now one of the world's largest grassroots movements for the environment. Held every year on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour engages millions of people in more than 180 countries and territories, switching off their lights to show support for our planet.
This year will be the 11th celebration here at the Caravelle. We will turn off lights on the hotels facade facing Lam Son Square and Dong Khoi St along with other unnecessary electrical appliances on premise. Our Reflections Restaurant, Signature Lounge & Café de l’Opera will be illuminated for the hour while our guests enjoy dinner and drink service by candlelight. We also encourage our guests to turn off their in-room lights from 8:30pm to 9:30pm.
Apart from switching off the lights, you can also support at home by adopting a low carbon lifestyle and reducing your use of single-use plastic products, in order to conserve our natural resources and reduce waste of all kinds. We here at the Caravelle are continually making efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and are leading the way with environmental initiatives in the hotel industry. Come and celebrate our efforts on the 28th along with raising awareness of energy conservation worldwide.
LED Lighting in Rooms
As we celebrate the release of our Suites this month, we are pleased to share further green initiatives within our new guestrooms. All rooms now feature LED light bulbs, replacing traditional bulbs which consume large amount of energy. The light-emitting diode (LED) is today's most energy-efficient lighting technology which could help to reduce the electricity consumption for lighting by up to 80% and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting.
Along with our new master lighting control panel situated within reach of your bed, our rooms are also equipped with a motion-sensor light at the entrance that will turn the lights on when it detects any motion and will automatically turn the light off after automatically a certain period of time. We believe the widespread use of LED lighting not only in our rooms but also in all our Front of house areas will have a great impact on our energy saving initiatives for 2020 and beyond.
Green Caravelle for a More Sustainable Environment
Along with our ongoing refurbishment which will finish in early 2020, Caravelle Saigon closes 2019 with many new and innovative environmental and sustainable programmes and practices. Unlike other 5-star competitors in the area, as an independent hotel, we have pioneered sustainable practices among our competitors.
In 2019, Caravelle was successful in securing its EarthCheck gold certificate as the first and only property in Vietnam since 2015. We have implemented our glass and refillable bottle project to remove up to 300,000 single use plastic bottles a year in both rooms and banquet operations.
Our newly renovated guest rooms are fitted with 100% electricity saving LED bulbs and double glazed windows to reduce the workload on AC and keep the rooms insulated. Our in room amenity’s including shavers, toothbrushes and combs have also been sourced from wheat husk, which is 100% biodegradable. Two months ago, Caravelle Saigon also won the Best Green Business Award from the European Chamber of Commerce.
Changing the hotel’s operation is not our main aim but rather to influence our staff, their family, and our guests to, little by little in their own way reduce their carbon footprint. We do look forward to 2020 being a prosperous year for the Caravelle to extend our green initiatives for a more sustainable environment.
